H
H came to the United Kingdom in July 2003 when she was just 16 years
old. She came alone, and had been forced to flee her country because
of the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia. During the war her father had
been forced to return to Eritrea. Her mother died soon after and she
was left in the care of relatives.
Upon her arrival in the UK, H was placed in a hostel by Camden Children,
Schools and Families Department. She was referred to Kick Start in July
2004.
H moved into Kick Start London's short stay, supported hostel. She has
since moved on to live in a small shared house, also managed by kick
Start.
H has received support from kick Start London on a variety of issues,
such as Immigration, Health, welfare benefits, education and money management.
She has been helped to enrol at college, apply for a disabled persons
travel card and we have applied to charities for grants to help her
with her education and basic clothing.
Despite her health problems and disability, H has made great progress
since coming to live with kick Start. She attends college, completing
an ESOL Level 1 course and starting work on her ESOL Level 2. She has
applied to study Travel and Tourism at University and hopes to still
be able to continue to study English at the same time. She is focussed
on completing her courses and achieving her educational goals.
